Nostalgia

My friend is a big Gene Stratton Porter fan, and while I'm not (maybe I could be, I've never read the books) I was fascinated by her house, that she designed herself. She did all her writing up there on the second story, where all those windows are. This is a fantasy of mine, to have my own place out in the woods to write amongst the trees, which is just to say I'm feeling very nostalgic for summer today. Winter hasn't officially arrived and already I feel it has lasted too long. I want the leaves to reattach themselves to the trees, or else spring to come quickly. Perhaps I need to move south where I can play in creeks all year long.

As soon as Christmas is over I want the tulips to start popping up. As far as a room of one's own...that I miss. I used to have my own little study, and then Hadley was born and we had to give the room to her. Ahh well. Some day I'll have another house, until then, this little one has lots of love growing in it.

My Christmas mood hasn't arrived this year. I think everyone has years like this. I'm just looking at it as a year of Christmas jubilee. I do not wish to sow or reap Christmas, but just harvest what grows wild from the fields. I am tired of the making.

And I'm dreaming of more than a room, I'm thinking of my own little cabin in the woods. It has been my secret fantasy for a long time. First, though, I have to find the perfect piece of land.

I remember going to visit the GSP historical site near Rome City when I was little...it was so close to where I grew up. I can absolutely see you living in your little cabin in the woods, Charmi.

Dwight Yoakam's "Silver Bells" always puts me in the Christmas mood. That and Christmas lights! Anyway- this version of this song has a Tex-Mex/conjunto backbeat. I turn it way up, the louder it goes the bigger my smile gets.

And if that doesn't do it for you, you will soon be getting an invite to make Tamales, a Mexican Christmas tradition. The drinking, the eating, merrymaking. . .

I heard Guster doing Carol of the Meows. Does that count?

Gene likes the Harry Connick, Jr./Lee Ann Womak version of "Baby It's Cold Outside." He says it does put him in a mood, but I'm not sure "Christmas" is the way to describe it.

On the subject of tamales, though, you know I'm there!
