Hop of Pop

Tom harvested these today from the back yard.

It was somewhat of a July miracle, because of this: Wired.
Gene just planted them last year.

With any luck this batch won't explode.

And then these popped up, later.

Do you guys brew your own beer? I experimented for a while with meade, but as I don't drink, the interest sort of faded. I've always been interested in the process, though.

BTW:The hops look really nice and healthy - kudos

Gene brewed beer years ago and now Tom is trying it out.

The hops were a fluke. Gene planted them as a sort of sight barrier between us and our neighbors. Who knew there would be a worldwide hop shortage?

I have hops growing in my yard, but I never harvest them. A waste, I know. I like the stickiness of the vines.

We hadn't really thought of harvesting them, either, but along comes our college-aged son...

So we have a batch of beer fermenting in the root cellar with our homegrown hops and cherries from our tree.

Did you plant the hops yourself or did they come with the house? I like the stickiness, too!

man oh man I couldn't believe they use pellets. I took Brad on a brewery tour, along with beer, whiskey, brandy and gin tasting, and I was definitely disappointed when they said they had to use hops when there was a shortage. They insisted it was only because of the shortage and they said they would again use hops "berries." Glad to see people appreciating a good beer. Brad and I would be happy to "help taste" your batch.

As soon as the beer is bottled and settled, you're invited!
