Burning a Hole in Your Pants

Or your pocket...

If you have ten bucks you just have to spend and a couple/three good poems, you might try this contest at The Adirondack Review. I've never spent money on something like this, but it might be worth it. I don't know. Ten bucks isn't killer. The deadline is tomorrow, though.

I really like the Adirondack Review.

The only contests I've entered are the ones that give you something for your money...like a copy or two of their magazine. The Laurel Review's annual chap contest gives you a year subscription (2 issues) for their $10 entrance fee.

That's a really good plan, Talia.

I'm just poking around right now. It's the end of the month and I need to fulfill my quota of sending out three new poems to 12 magazines. Four mags down, eight to go.

I don't think I'll send to Adirondack yet.

My experience has been the same as Talia's. The only contests I've ever entered have either given a year's subscription for the entry fee or a copy of the winning chapbook.

Then again, $5 for one poem isn't bad. I spend about that much on a pint at Fiddler's. This would be a better use of the money in terms of my long-term health...

Have you ever been on Duotrope's Digest (duotrope.com)? Great resource if you're looking for places to send out to.

Yeah, I'm going to save my money for books.

I've seen Duotrope, but I haven't used it yet. Mainly I've been perusing New Pages.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll try it.

just for the heck of it, I entered that new poem I have on my blog, "precious."

what's $5, you know? barely a gallon of gas...

True, true.

I figure I have a day to think about it. If I do I'd probably spring for the 3 for $10, though, increase my odds by minuscule amounts.

i really like AR as well, even though i entered their short story contest and didn't win. ;)

they have some great shorts on their site as well as strong poetry.

Maggie, yes, it's a good mag, but probably not worth wasting my money on a contest.

Sorry you didn't win the short story contest!

Thanks for dropping by.
