I think it might be a moth based on the fact that it's wings are flat and not held up in the air. Most moths rest this way. Also, hard to tell but looks like the antennae have "fuzzy" bits which means moth not butterfly.
There are field guides just for moths and good luck because there are tons of moth species!!!
I believe it's a moth, too. Now that I'm doing a little research, I found that butterflies have clubbed antennae (sp) and smooth bodies. This guy's body was a little fuzzy, I think.
