Moments of Glow

Day one and we made it as far as West Virginia. There are no pics yet. We did see some nice wind turbines lopping through the air in Pennsylvania in a little valley there. We’ve decided to head for the Outer Banks, Cape Hatteras, the ocean. Like the desert, the ocean is foreign to me. I don’t think I could live with it on a long-term basis, but it’s nice to see.

The trees we saw in Pennsylvania had an expectant glow, reminding me of Jennifer, who at any moment (maybe even already) will be giving birth in a hot tub. These life cycles spin me around. My daughter’s hands on the steering wheel look so delicate and fine, almost like the day she was born. We stand in these moments with all the other moments crowding around. Spring blows in visions of my father, an oh so young 29-year-old on a motorcycle with beautiful flowing black hair and a scruffy beard, man of the ‘70s. Sometimes I recognize his spirit in other men that I’m around. My heart tightens when I have to keep driving and pull myself away.

Well Charmi I hope it is spring-like wherever you are...it is January here. The wind is blowing violently and snow dust is blowing around. My tulips which are beginning to bud have drooped over and I don't blame them. I thought we might have a beautiful Easter, but it might be a white Easter.

The poetry, contrary to what you have said, seems to be coming quite nicely, judging from your last papragraph there. Maybe you should write more prose poetry. I'm going to try those Lee assignments myself. I'm quite out of the habit of poetry with this semester widning down and I have been tackling the follwing 4 books simultaneously looking for inspiration: Nancy Botkin's "parts that were once whole," Lawrence Ferlinghetti's "a Coney Island of the Mind," Richard Greenfield's "" A Carnage in the Lovetrees," and some poetry exercise book called something like "The Practice of Poetry." Together they make a grand mixture.

Have fun, be safe, and I'll see you on Monday!

So far it's been a whirlwind tour. We've traveled 1200 miles since Tuesday. I've heard about your snow and the nasty weather and I feel fairly guilty being down here.

Have fun with the poetry exercises. I got some decent phrases, but nothing more. I need to revise them majorly to even begin to have anything. See you soon.

Warmer weather would be nice. Glad you let us know there's no news. When things get quiet your way I just expect something has happened.

Tom was born the Tuesday after Easter, nice and fat, 9 lb, 9 oz., full of Easter candy, I guess. He still expects an Easter basket, too.
