Unsuspecting Fruit

I am worried about my two pear trees and my cherry tree. They are trying to bloom. The pic at right is one of the pears, all swollen in anticipation, not suspecting the fickle nature of an Indiana spring. This does not bode well for September and my pear butter dreams, to say nothing whatsoever about cherry pie on the 4th of July.

Isn't ir horrible? I was so looking forward to all the red tulips that I have in front of my house that would by now be so eye-catching. My mother has a long hedge of lilac bushes that we probably won't get to enjoy. The rest of my garden is hearty (or is it hardy?) bublbs which I'm sure will fare well. I can't remember such a "springless" spring in all my lifetime.

Yeah, everything was so warm and tempting a month ago. We stuck asparagus, hops, blueberries and raspberries in the ground. The asparagus and hops will be fine, but the blueberries and raspberries were starting to come out of dormancy. There's got to be poetry in that somewhere. It's fine to get frosted while you're sleeping, but not when you're starting to turn green!

My tulips are the later variety. They're leafed out right now, but laying on their sides looking floppy. I have a large patch of poppies I inherited from my grandmother that is sprouting all over the place, but poppies are tough. They're used to dying back and being reborn. After they bloom they die back and sleep half the summer away.

Jeez, I could talk gardening all day. Half my plants are gifts from friends and relatives, some of them passed away. They hold such memories.
