Not That

Yesterday I succumbed to peer pressure and joined Facebook. I'm not proud, but there it is. This morning I have a Facebook hangover. Or maybe it feels a bit like when I started using a cell phone. I knew I had to do it, but the looming possibility of wasting enormous amounts of time hung over me like an overused metaphor. In one day I picked up 23 friends. My son, Tom, has 329 friends! He doesn't even know 329 people.

Anyway, the long and short of it is, you can join me there, but I'm only going to check it in the morning. Facebook seems like the perfect way to avoid writing, and let's face it, kids, I'm not a spring chicken. I don't have tons of time to waste not writing.

Yea, my son has about the same. I've got 37 friends now...

I'm still not joining. I've also recently given up my cell phone. Simply by choice. I don't need the darn thing.

I think the key is to contain it!

Talia, you would like it, but you haven't got the time.

Since I joined, what I think somewhere around a week ago now, I've found that it does get a bit easier to manage. I have still spent quite a bit of time on it each day, but that time is beginning to dwindle. What I have gotten excited about is being able to chat directly with a few people that I haven't otherwise had an opportunity to speak with. That's been really nice. Anyway, moderation, as in all things is the key ;-)

stay away from the word games. start playing Scrabble or Word Twist and you'll become OCD about it...

I'd like to play scrabble, but it would be a long, drawn out game. I've promised myself only to Facebook over my morning coffee.

However...

My kids keep showing me stuff. And now I have dog friends.

Listen to Big about the word games. Though I've still yet to challenge him in Word Twist, because he'd thrash me.

Also, Talia: Really? The cell? I don't even think it's safe to not have one at all...car breaks down, car accident, a hundred other situations. I love the sense of security of knowing I can call 911 inside of 5 seconds no matter where I am...

I'm not the one you need to fear at Word Twist. That would be Ms. Sally. She, as I believe the kids say these days, pwns me at Word Twist...

I'll send you a Scrabble invite, Charmi...

Ryan,

I always forgot to charge my phone, or even bother to turn it on, so the few occasions that it was helpful, it really wasn't. The truth is, it's kind of like vaccinations. As long as everyone else in the world has them I'm safe, then I'll be alright. We all went a long time without them, so it's the sense of security is only a mindset.

We went a long time without vaccinations too, but the sense of security they offer these days, I would say, is a bit more than just a mindset.

Talia, I have to agree with you wholeheartedly on both points. I have yet to have a cell. When you don't have one you don't need one. Also, yes, my car broke down with a trunk FULL of groceries and the baby. I walked into a restaurant and used their phone. They were very nice, in fact, here's a shout out to Fiesta Tapatia, they have great authentic Mexican cuisine at one income prices!!! And, when your car breaks down in their parking lot, they let you use the phone!

I always thought I would need one when I was preggo with Amelia, just in case my water broke, etc, etc. Never did. Still don't.

Charmi, Gasp, you're on facebook yet I have to walk away from the can of mandarin oranges? Tsk, tsk. I do have to say, I'm a bit drawn in when I read about scrabble.

Yes, I have fallen into disreputable ways.

About the cell phone, though, when your daughters start going out into the world, you'll change your tunes.
